Before upgrading to Big Sur, I did the typical system backup and all was fine. After upgrading to Big Sur, connecting my Time Machine (TM) WD external disk (via USB C) results in a 'read-only' mount and TM refuses to repair the disk or backup.

Drive Partition and Format - El Capitan or Later


  1. Open Disk Utility in the Utilities' folder.
  2. After Disk Utility loads select the drive (out-dented entry with 1TB WD Passport...) from the side list.
  3. Click on the Erase tab in the Disk Utility toolbar. A panel should drop down.
  4. In the drop down panel set the partition scheme to GUID. Set the Format type to APFS (SSDs only) or Mac OS Extended (Journaled.)
  5. Click on the Apply button and click on the Done button when it is activated.
  6. Quit Disk Utility.

Before upgrading to Big Sur, I did the typical system backup and all was fine.

After upgrading to Big Sur, connecting my Time Machine (TM) WD external disk (via USB C) results in a 'read-only' mount and TM refuses to repair the disk or backup. I have tried ejecting and reconnecting, Disk Utility First Air, and booting up in Recovery Mode (at Apple Support's suggestion) with no luck.

The drive is visible after mounting in 'read-only' and accessible, so I don't believe the drive is the issue. It is Mac Extended Journaled and Encrypted, but nothing special otherwise. Other WD external drives for media and content, similarly setup, all mount fine in read/write.
