I received some great feedback from the Low End Mac readers inregards to our Classic Mac OS Web series.

WaMCom, Mozilla 1.2.1, and the alternate Mozilla port of 1.3.1 werewell regarded. All versions have some odd bugs, but nothing too severe, mostly some small interface issues.

One reader had some very interesting notes on Internet Explorer. Infact, his website (in German, our English adaptation below) containssome goodnotes overall. I still say Internet Explorer is an okay browserwith some neat features, but I do miss tabs, popup blocking, and a fewother extras.

Also, I find Internet Explorer is a tad unstable on my Macs. If youcan get Internet Explorer running stable for you, by all means give ita try. Microsoft is discontinuing support for Internet Explorer on theMac, so you might want to grab the download while you can.

Another reader found Netscape 4.x to be very lacking in comparisonto the other browsers. Also, while limited, Netscape 3 did a better jobfor our reader with basic browsing. You can even add Flash andQuickTime support by copying the plugins from Netscape 4.x to Netscape3. Thanks for the tips, Chris.

Also, Opera 5 had a few fans - over Opera 6.0.3 anyway - but thefans did not suggest using Opera over WaMCom, iCab, or even InternetExplorer. Opera 5 may prove to be more stable than 6.0.3, but it lackstabs or a password manager. It seems to have some page rendering issuesas well. That's understandable, as Opera 5 is now 3 versions old.

Keep the comments coming. I don't have much information on Netscape6 or 7, and I believe both are available for PPC Macs running theclassic Mac OS.

Also, any suggestions for good chat, FTP, or other web applicationswould be greatly appreciated.

The selection of Web Browsers for the classic Mac OS is reduced -iCab is the only up-to-date one still being developed. With a little'tuning' of the available browsers serve as passable Internetprograms:

  • Assign the program of more memory.
  • Turn off virtual memory.
  • Use a RAM disk and store the browser's cache there.
  • If you connect by Modem/PPP, set the name server address toautomatic configuration in the TCP/IP control panel.
  • Now and then examine whether the name server address still matchesyour current ISP.
  • Be sure you've installed the CarbonLibversion 1.6 system extension.

The following browsers are available:

Internet Explorer

Stably and fast, with print preview, variable text size, configurable symbol border, and much more. For PowerPC-based Macsrunning Mac OS 8 or later. (DownloadIE 5.1). The Mac versions will no longer be available fromMicrosoft after January 2006 (info).

Tips:

  • You can search the Internet from the address box: Simply enter aquestion mark, a blank space, and the search word in the addressfield.
  • With JavaScript switched on, activate the 'reference in case oferrors' option, otherwise you can't break out of a poorly programmedscript ('options: Web contents: Active contents: Active scripts').

Troubleshooting:

Netscape Version 7.2 Download

  • Clean, new install of the program (info).
  • Examine and/or recreate the Desktop file (e.g. with TechTool Lite).
  • Replace Apple's 'Internet Config Extension' with a fresh original(download).
  • If you have several partitions, install the program on the one youboot from.
  • Simply wait: some problems are caused 'on the other side of theline'.
  • Change to another ISP.

Further optimization:

  • Store the History.html file on a RAM disk and put an alias to it atthe original position in the System Folder (Preferences:Explorer).
  • Make an alias of the RAM disk and name it Temporary Files. Use thealias to replace Temporary Files in Preferences: Explorer.

Resources:

  • Converter for IE archive files (WAX/WAC)

iCab

iCab is a fast browser with greatfunctionality and small system requirements (info, download iCab).

[4:20 PM] Netscape/AOL Introduce Netscape 6 To Mixed Reactions
by Staff

AOL officially unveiled Netscape 6.0 today to great fanfare. User reaction in the Mac community has been mixed however. Netscape has released a Preview Release of the new browser; a preview release is effectively in between an Alpha and a Beta release. According to Netscape:

America Online, Inc. today announced Preview Release 1 of its next-generation Netscape 6 browser. In addition, AOL and Gateway , the leading seller of consumer PCs by revenue, introduced a family of specialized Internet appliances featuring 'Instant AOL' to advance the AOL Anywhere strategy. Both Netscape 6 and the new Internet appliances are powered by Netscape's Gecko browser engine technology.

Steve Case, America Online's Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, announced in his keynote address to Spring Internet World 2000 today:

  • Preview Release 1 of the Netscape 6 Internet browser and communications software suite, powered by Gecko technology, that will enable Web browsing and Internet communications across multiple platforms and devices.
  • The AOL Gateway family of specialized Internet appliances featuring 'Instant AOL' -- which automatically will launch the service as soon as the device is switched on -- include a countertop appliance, wireless Web pad and desktop appliance, a simplified, lower-cost alternative to the PC. All three devices are powered by Gecko and the open source LINUX operating system.
  • Full support by Netscape 6 and Gecko for state-of-the-art, open source standards -- including XML -- that enable Web developers to create powerful Internet-based applications to enrich the interactive experience for consumers and businesses.
  • The launch of a major marketing campaign for Netscape.

Netscape 6 Provides Convenience and Power for Next Stage of the Internet's Development

Netscape 6 expands the Internet's convenience from the desktop PC to additional Internet devices like TV set-top boxes, Internet appliances and Web-based kiosks, as well as on a wide range of computing platforms, including LINUX, Apple OS and Windows.

Breaking new ground with its small size and sleek performance, Netscape 6 is faster to download and easier to install than ever before, and renders Web pages quickly for more convenient and enjoyable browsing.

Netscape 6 offers Web developers full support for Internet standards, the common programs that enable them to create richer and more interactive content, and to create new online applications so that users can perform everyday tasks online without having to install additional software.

Netscape 6 also provides a variety of innovative features and options, including:

  • 'My Sidebar,' the first-of-its-kind, fully customizable feature that lets consumers always keep the online functions and information they rely on most right at their fingertips. Netscape today is announcing that several leading providers, including CNN, eBay, CNET, and NYTIMES.COM, have developed tabs for My Sidebar, making their content available to Netscape 6 users.
  • A complete package of communications functions, including Netscape Instant Messenger, and the ability to access multiple e-mail accounts, including AOL accounts, at the same time.
  • 'Themes' which let consumers personalize the look and feel of the browser. Users who want to create a 'news theme,' for example, can do so using CNN.com.
  • Best of breed enhancements such as the Java plug-in from Sun Microsystems;
  • Net2Phone-powered Internet telephony services that let users make calls from their computers; the new AutoTranslate feature, based upon Gist-in-Time(TM) from Alis Technologies, Inc., which translates Web pages in one click; and Netscape 6 Cookie Manager, which allows consumers to accept or block cookies placed on their hard drives.

You can find more information and download links for the new release at Netscape's Web site. A note from the download page:

Netscape 6 Preview Release 1 is a pre-release version of the next generation browser from Netscape. Given its pre-release status, Netscape recommends that you install this software only if you regularly test pre-release products. Installing Netscape 6 should not interfere with current installations of Netscape software, other browsers, or your system software. However, as a precaution you should back up your system prior to installation. Downloading this version assumes you have read the licensing agreement and understand the potential issues associated with using pre-release products.

The Mac Observer Spin: It's good to see AOL give Navigator some attention. There have been several reports during recent weeks about AOL Netsacpe acquisition and the subsequent breakdown within Netscape. Of interest is the fact that the company is showing off version 6.0 of the product before version 5.0, popularly known as Mozilla, is still mired in the open source development effort.

Also of interest is the rest of the press release which talk about moving Navigator to set top boxes and Internet appliances. It seems clear from our vantage point that AOL is not interested in the least in fighting for more PC/Mac market share If they were, they would probably go ahead and make their own product the default browser with AOL itself.

Now that we have complained, let's heap on the praise for the company for releasing the Mac (and Linux) versions of this preview version simultaneously with the PC version. Kudos.
